I have an iphone 4s with Voda AU and last week (20th Sept 2012) updated to ios6. I noticed a 20gb data usage over $6000 AUD. Reading online Verizon and AT&T customers have also reported that iPhone 5 devices and iOS6 are reporting excessive data usage. I accepted the carrier update 13.1 but can confirm that my phone is still downloading over GPRS (3G) and ignoring the Wifi connection

You've come to the right place and I can certainly help you to determine why this occurred and how to prevent in future. Have you now been billed for this amount or is it showing in your My Vodafone/1512 service?

If you're now using the iOS 6 software you can turn data off by going into your "Settings" - "General" - "Cellular" - then switch both "Cellular Data" and "Enable 3G Data" to "Off". When you're finished you can easilly switch it back on the same way. If you haven't already, I would suggest disabling the data now until we figure out what is going on to prevent further charges.

If you've got apps running in the background, there may be data used by them even if you've not got the app up on the screen. The amount of data used will vary depending on the specific app and how much data it requires.

I'd like to take a look at the breakdown of data use so we can get closer to what has used it. I've sent you a PM here with my contact details and some information I'll need from you via email to access your account.

having the exact same issue. never used more than 500mb a month coz i'm always logged on to wifi (home work) now i used 1gb and more it in less than 10 days ? apple store tells me there is not problem (must be my router )) and ur customer service suggested to turn off all my celluar data and notifications?

well where is the point of using my iphone than?

i'm with u since 3-4 years (and against all my friends opinions around australia, i never had any problems with u guys ever) but i'm not happy at all how u guys acknowledge or not in this instance, that there is a problem. also most of ur store workers haven't even heard of it and handling me like "newbie smart phone customer" (who haven't got a clue what he is talking about). I do as my over amount is rising, i turned everything off (which is annoying) but i'm not willing to pay any excess also its only 13$ or something so far, but i still have more than 16 days to go. hope u guys can figure something out ( also will send u @madeleine a pm with all my details

Do I have to pay this silly bill even though its not my fault? American carriers reimbursed people...

Data spikes can be caused for a number of reasons, but if you're finding that your data usage has completely changed since downloading the update, this is something I'd definitely like to look into and clarify.

Am I able to ask, is the data usage occurring at times when you're logged onto WiFi, or at all times, no matter whether you're at work or home? If the data you're using on WiFi is being counted towards your 3G rather than against your WiFi, we may need to look at tweaking a few settings to get your phone picking up the WiFi signal correctly.

The best way for me to find out exactly what's happening is to check the times of your data sessions against your usage patters, so I've sent you a PM requesting a couple of your account details, which you can access by clicking here. If you'd like to pass those details through when you get a chance, I'll investigate a little further into your recent spike in data.

This has happened to me as well!

I haven't gone over my data allowance in over 4 years on vodafone (with a smart phone the entire time).  After upgrading to iOS6 in the middle of my last billing cycle, the final bill came out as $200+ from extra data usage!?!?

There is no way we should have to pay these crazy high costs!  It seems ALL american carriers and MOST Australian carriers have reimbursed the costs.  Hopefully vodafone comes around...

I have the same issue.

I have WIFI both at home and work so rarely have to use 3G - i would be out of WIFI range for less than two hours a day on average - yet my usage is almost at my 500MB limit half way through the month.

When I upgraded from my iPhone 4 I was told by Vodafone that my average usage for the preceding 6 months was less than 300MB so 500MB would be plenty for my new 24 month plan.

i have turned 3G off for now but this is far from ideal as it defeats the point of getting the upgrade in the first place. It's not like I'm benefitting from 4G speeds so I don't understand why the same usage levels ive always used are chewing through so much data. 

i would like somebody to review my account / usage and offer a) an explanation and b) a solution that will allow me to continue with the same modest usage I have used for the last 4 years with a Vodafone iPhone without the extortionate excess usage charges please.

I also have the same issue. I recently upgraded my iPhone 4 to an iPhone 5.

I have spoken with the support team at Vodafone and they have asked me to turn off plenty of settings which I had turned on with my previous phone. Does this not defeat the point in having a smart phone if I can't have the things turned on that  I have previosuly had turned on for the last 2 years?
