Software Update Weekly Wrap - 8th May 2014

Device Portfolio Manager

We know how much you love to have the latest software on your phone and we love to get it to you. But, we can't always get it to you as quickly as you'd like. What we can do is keep you in the loop throughout the process. This weekly wrap is our way of doing that.

Stuff you need to know about software updates

Just as we don't make the phones we sell, we don't code the software that runs on them. We do some testing to make sure they work as we expect them to, but that's all there is to our part in the process.

Software updates are complicated, and there's a lot of moving parts to take into account (enough to fill three whole blog posts). But that's for us to worry about, not you.
We'll do the hard work behind the scenes like chasing our suppliers and doing the testing. The easy stuff is letting you know how we're progressing, and that's where this post and the table below comes in.

News from overseas

All the info we have on the updates we know about is below. Keep in mind though that this just for us here at Vodafone AU.
What happens overseas doesn't apply locally, so that info on a UK release or news about Android 4.4 KitKat you read on the web won't be coming to your phone straight away.
As soon as we hear news though, this is the place to read all about it. I'll be back for you again next week so stay tuned if what you're looking for isn't here yet.

What's in the labs?

Galaxy S4 Cat 4 last week was announced that the update will roll out late April/early May but now you changed it to late May/early June. Why???

The new android version will be announced in June but we are still waiting. This is very annoying.

@SimgeYıldız - last week the update was expected to arrive for testing early May, not be released to customers. This week you're right, it has changed, but these things do change from time to time. Issues crop up during development, resources are assigned to other projects, updates get cancelled.

Vodafone only test the update, not code or create it. They're at the mercy of Samsung's schedule and in this case it looks like that schedule has changed.

Your phone will never have the latest version of Android at the same time that Google announces it, so there's no point worrying what Google might release at I/O next month. Have a read of these articles (linked at the top of the post) to understand why.

If you need a phone with Android 4.4 on it, @grinja87 why did you buy one that didn't have it installed?

Dear customer,

Thank you for contacting Samsung customer support.

According to the description you have provided, we would like to inform you that there is currently no specific release date of 4.4 firmware update for your GT-I9506. Please note that before release of every software update for our phones there is testing period, during which we are testing whether is that update running correctly on specified device. During this time the update can get delayed or canceled completely if we find that it is runing correctly.

Could you let me know the specific feature that you need from 4.4 @grinja87? I or the other experts might be able to offer an alternative that will work on your current version of Android.

Hey @JanMRS

The issues were found with 227 version so with the bug fixes I would assume it would be 230 .

There was an article here about it. Cheers.

Hi there, could you please explain that?

SamsungGalaxy S3 4G (LTE)Android 4.3 (Knox/Gear)

Available now.

This was on 1st May.

Yesterday you changed that to :

SamsungGalaxy S3 4G (LTE)Android 4.3 (Knox/Gear)Awaiting Maintenance Release for testing. ETA not yet confirmed.

I updated my phone on Monday and I noticed really serious battery drain... You advised that i have to take it into a Vodafone store... sorry I need my phone, and I can`t wait another 2 weeks for the repair. I think this is a really bad ad for the Samsung and for the Vodafone...

@ZsoltRajna

I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing battery issues with your phone. If you've been advised to take it in for repair, you may be able to use one of our loan phones while yours is being fixed.

In regard to the software update for the S3 4G, this update was split into two parts by Samsung.

The first was available from 29/4/14.

As you pointed out, we're awaiting the next part so we can begin testing.

I've made a small update, above, to make this more clear.

Lawrence.

Hey @akash123x

The 4.3 Feature Release 2 for Xperia M rolled out from us yesterday. If you grabbed your phone from us, it's best to make sure you've got the update we've rolled out.

Thanks,

Cait

Hey @Juffmou

There's no call out on the list for the S4 Active and there's no plans yet when or if 4.3 will be on it's way for the S4 active.

Keep an eye on the weekly updates as it'll be the first place to tell you if it'll be coming our way.

Thanks,

Cait

Thanks in advance :smileywink:
