Software Update Weekly Wrap - 30th January 2014

Device Portfolio Manager

We know how much you love to have the latest software on your phone and we love to get it to you. But, we can't always get it to you as quickly as you'd like. What we can do is keep you in the loop throughout the process. This weekly wrap is our way of doing that.

Stuff you need to know about software updates

Just as we don't make the phones we sell, we don't code the software that runs on them. We do some testing to make sure they work as we expect them to, but that's all there is to our part in the process.

Software updates are complicated, and there's a lot of moving parts to take into account (enough to fill three whole blog posts). But that's for us to worry about, not you.
We'll do the hard work behind the scenes like chasing our suppliers and doing the testing. The easy stuff is letting you know how we're progressing, and that's where this post and the table below comes in.

News from overseas

All the info we have on the updates we know about is below. Keep in mind though that this just for us here at Vodafone AU.
What happens overseas doesn't apply locally, so that info on a UK release or news about Android 4.4 KitKat you read on the web won't be coming to your phone straight away.
As soon as we hear news though, this is the place to read all about it. I'll be back for you again next week so stay tuned if what you're looking for isn't here yet.

What's in the labs?

Have you ever convented a lengh of string into a unit of time? If yes then that's how long.

However ballpark is 2-12 weeks.

Yeah! Probably a weak I think. Depends upon testing team

Why Samsung Galaxy S3 update is not rolling out??? It's outrageous - whole world got updates and only Australian mobile providers are sitting on their collective backsides and doing nothing! I understand a bit of delay, but two-three months? I can update manually, but it is annoying!

My S4 hasn't got 4.3 update yet. Is it still being rolled out?

@SamuelR'Dran  the update should be available for your S4 now. Did you get the handset on a plan, or did you buy your phone outright and just use it with a Vodafone SIM?

Note2 here. I plugged my phone into my mac with Kies saying the firmware is ready to be updated 4.3. I got past the upgrade t&cs with the app saying my phone requires more charge (it was 9%). Took my phone off the computer to charge from the wall (as it charges quicker). Once it was charged, I plugged it into the computer but Kies advised that the firmware was up to date 4.1.2. What's going on?

Hi @monkey

Can you close the Kies application and restart your computer. Since it stopped after starting an upgrade probably why , restarting the app and the comp should do the trick!

Did you know you can also update via data on your phone ? This is completely free :smileyhappy:

Check out this support page on the Samsung Note 2 software update:

Hope this helps.

Hi Cyrille13. No luck on my side. Rebooted computer. Uninstalled and reinstalled kies. Rebooted phone. Checked update via phone and states is up to date Still says latest firmware is 4.1.2. ... sad monkey @('_:smileywink:@

Hi @monkey if the update is still in the process of being rolled out, there are only a certain number of people who can update each day. Although you may have been selected for the update initially, by the time you came back after charging up your phone your slot may have been re-allocated to another user.

Give it a shot again tomorrow, the clocks usually reset during midday and 2PM eastern time.

That's a little disappointing. Oh well....back to the waiting game (im kind of excited for 4.3)

@monkey

Normally update through Kies is not in batches to be honest. I just wanted to be sure when I said this to you so I checked with Samsung and they agreed software via Kies is not in batches.

Can you try via Kies again ? What does it say ? Same firmware up to date? Your kies is also up to date?

Edit: However I will have to agree with @kjmci on the batch release of software over FOTA. After the 14th day it is released to everyone in general. @monkey If I were you I would be checking for the update every day at the time kjmci mentioned just out of pure excitement :smileysurprised:

@monkey the update is a massive step forward in the way the handset operates. While performance is roughly the same it is definitely A worthwhile upgrade. Hang tight... Your spot in the cue will come soon enough. As @kjmci mentioned its a certain amount of handsets each day.

I managed to commence the update via kies... which was great.

but, during the upgrade process it stopped at 30% for about 3 hours.

A firmware upgrade recovery failed.

im in the process of downloading the 2gb file again to try and resore my phone as its now stuck in recovery mode :smileysad:

Yay! I'm back from the dead and running 4.3. I think Kies on osx mavericks is a little flakey. I updated through a windows 8 virtual machine without a hitch (quick too).

@monkey theres also the option of downloading the firmware before you before you even plug the phone in. I find that this works much better for me: goto firmware update settings and tick the box to download the latest version: something to keep in mind for the next release or of you have another handset you want to do.

Performance of note 2 has greatly improved with 4.3 update. Satisfied with the improvements

my Galaxy S4 (GT-I9506) is still on 4.2.2, when 4.3 upgrade will happen for this model?

@monkey my update from Kies did exactly the same thing but at 7%. It got stuck for hours then crashed. I have Mavericks also. I was also stuck in recovery mode but the second attempt to install the update worked. I like the update except for the fact that my battery seems to drain twice as fast as it did before.

@Sassi666 Interesting with your battery usage. Personally I have found it to last a little longer than before.

Kies can be challenging. I had freezing issues myself at first. Removing the sd card made all the difference

@diwakarchennaka   The update that was released was only for our CAT 3 models of the GALAXY S4 (GT-9505). There's no news on an update for your CAT 4 model (GT9506), but you'll see it here first when it's accounced.

Hi

A few weeks ago the update for the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active was included as being a future release, but this has since fallen off the listing. Can you please provide an explanation as to why this happened?

We've doubled checked for you and the latest version for the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active is 4.2.2 which was released on the 22nd of December. You can check out the exact version details here.
