The world of smartphones, and of modern technology of all shapes and sizes, is a competitive one. Each year, handset manufacturers battle it out to be the people’s favourite. We know it’s a big commitment, deciding which phone to spend the next couple of years with, and the likes of Apple, Samsung, Nokia and Sony know this too. Of course, it’s no longer just handsets that fight for your attention and allegiance. Since smartphones have become more and more accessible, you’ll also need to think about which operating system (Windows, iOS, Android, or Blackberry OS), and of course which wonderful apps you’d like to download In terms of app stores, there are two main players: Apple’s App Store and Google Play. All Android phones have default access to Google Play, while downloading any apps using an iPhone is done through the App Store. Operating systems and app stores are the same for tablet users, too: if you’ve got an Android tablet, you’ll also have access to Google Play, while iPad users access the App Store.
Which app store comes out on top?
Here at Vodafone, we wanted to find out the definitive answer to the burning question: which app store is best? The stores battled it out over six gruelling rounds:
Date of opening
Number of phones with access to the stores
Number of apps available for download
Number of apps downloaded
Revenue generated by apps
We also compared the most popular apps at the time of creation, and the two flagship phones for each store: the Samsung GALAXY S4 in Google’s corner, and the iPhone 5 in Apple’s. Scroll down to see how each store performed – and who the ultimate winner is.
