I'm on my 2nd prepaid modem and once again having problems registering for My Vodafone.
I get a temporary password via SMS but this page hangs during the registration process

For a simple 3 step process, I've wasted a lot of time.

You've come to the right place and I can definitely help you out with this one. Sorry to hear it's been such a frustrating experience for you, I know exactly how you feel as I only learnt this little trick a couple of weeks ago. Basically what I discovered is that prepaid MBB isn't actually compatible with My Vodafone full stop. Postpaid broadband accounts are along with all pre and postpaid voice accounts. I'm not 100% sure why this is the case but I can assure you that we haven't forgotten about our trusty prepaid MBB users. Instead we offer a completely different usage tracker and account for this.
If you can head to our website here and then hover over "My Vodafone" along the top red bar of the page, then scroll down to the bottom where it says "Manage your mobile broadband". Once you've clicked on this you'll be able to login with your mobile broadband number as the username and your PIN number as the password. For a shortcut to this login page you can also click here.
Are you able to give this a shot and let me know how you go? Once you're logged into this page you can not only view your usage for the month but you can also recharge from here too.

I tried another attempt with the temporary password generation via SMS.
This time I got a DNS error.

Hmmm... That's strange. That's by signing in via "Manage your broadband" rather than "My Vodafone" right? Can I get you to try popping your mobile broadband number in the username field in its "61" format instead to see if that makes a difference? To do this simply remove the 0 at the start of the number and pop 61 in instead.
If that doesn't work I've sent you a Private Message with my contact details so that I can check this out for you. If you could email me the requested details I'll try to get this up and running for you by the end of today.

I've had sucess registering on My Vodafone today, (before I saw your post) via Manage your Mobile Broadband using the temporary password delivered by SMS and my 10 digit 0420 number. I used my work computer and network with no Vodafone USB dongle connected.
Unfortunately I'm having problems recharging via card.

It's good to see you've had success registering for MyVodafone. At times, trying something a little different is all that's needed to get things working the way they should.

You should definitely be able to recharge via your card without hassle. Are you able to let me know if the voucher works correctly for you, as this may have something to do with the way your account is set up. If you've got another card handy, it may be worth giving that a try to see if the payment goes through.

The voucher worked fine - purchased @ Coles with the same card as I tried the recharge.

Glad to hear that you were able to recharge using your voucher.
When you're getting the error while trying to recharge, is this happening on the Vodafone website or when trying to set up a payment through My Vodafone and how far through the recharge process where you able to go before getting this error?
I want to make sure that you're not incorrectly charged for the failed recharge attempts, so please let me know if you see any charges on your card statement.

I'll just keep buying vouchers as required - I've done that with my pp phones for quite a time.
