Turning off cellular data from your handset is a good way to help prevent unexpected usage as there are a number of features and functions on smart phones these days that will use data even when you aren't actively accessing the Internet. I am wondering if any of these factors apply to you?

 

  • Do you use apps on your phone? Apps are a big part of smart phone usage, however many apps use data to update and to download advertising. If you don't do it regularly, it is a good idea to shut down any apps running in the background when they aren't in use. This helps prevent extra data usage.
  • You mention tethering. Is this something you use regularly? Tethering is great when you want to quickly access a website from your computer rather than your phone. This said though, browsing the Internet on your computer via a tethered phone will generally use a fair bit more data than accessing the same site from your phone. Many sites have specially designed mobile versions that are designed to use less data than the full site that you would access from your computer.
  • Cloud storage servers are another feature to consider when trying to determine how much data you use. They are like big online hard drives that allow you to store your files online, which enables you to access them easily from any other computer or phone. They do however require you to upload all the files, which uses data, and consequently dowload them again when you wish to access or view them. This can use a lot of data, especially if your phone is regularly and automatically uploading your files to the server.

 

Other things that can use data include, but are not limited to: emails (especially if they have large files attached), streaming video/audio, web browsing and app or music downloads. There is a data calculator on our website that will help to give you an idea of how much data you would expect to use each month, based on your habits.

 

It's a good idea to monitor your usage to help prevent exceeding your monthly allowance. You can do this online through My Vodafone, or by using the My Vodafone app, which is available for most smart phones from the relevant app store or marketplace.

I'm not sure what you mean by this sorry. Tethering, a I mentioned above, will use data. Do you mean that you have started using your wife's phone as a tether point or WiFi hotspot to access data on your phone? And that the data usage on your account is still going up despite accessing the data via your wife's phone?

 

If you could clarify that for me, that would be great. Also, please let me know if you think any of the factors I've mentioned above may be affecting you. With some more information I'm sure we can get to the bottom of why this is happening.
