How to cancel service after contract expired?

Message 1 of 8 (1,458 Views)

Hello,

My contract ends on the 9th of June 2012.  I am going overseas so I won't be using my phone for the next six months and don't want to keep paying after my 12 month contract has finished.  But how do I stop the service?  There doesn't seem to be any easy way to do this from the My Vodafone site and when I went into a store they just told me to go on the website. They also said after the contract was expired I would automatically still be on the same plan, just month to month.  I don't want to keep paying after the 9th of June but I don't know how to let Vodafone know.

Can anyone tell me how to organise this?

Thanks,

Anna

I guess I want to keep my number - but it's okay if I can't.

I'll probably get a new phone and a new plan (with Vodafone) when I get back, but that won't be til the end of the year (November or December).  If I switch to a pre-pay service then surely I can just not recharge for 6 months and my account/number will stay active?

Hi Anna,

Yea your best bet is to call 1555 (either on the day your contract ends or before you leave overseas) and ask to switch to a prepaid number. This is ensure you get the same number when you get back :smileyhappy:

Ok, just called 1555, which was a  bit of a waste of time.  The guy I spoke to didn't seem to understand my situation and just told me to call Vodafone on the day my contract ends (I'll be in the UK and this won't be very easy) and I also don't trust that they won't just automatically charge me for the month of June...then he transfered me somewhere else and I got tired of waiting on hold (I'm leaving the country today so I'm a bit pressed for time!)

Is there any way to just say I don't want my services to continue after the end of my contract?!  Keeping the number is less important to me than just organising this now so I don't have to worry about it overseas.

Thanks,

Anna

Well if you can make it to a store (i think there are stores in Sydney and (maybe) Melbourne airports) they can call the teams for you and wont have to wait so long on hold. But either way the only way to cancel it is to speak to the customer care team (as far as I know).

Thanks for your suggestions!

I'm really hoping someone from Vodafone might actually respond to my question too, as it seems like such a simple thing and yet somehow not at all easy to resolve (seems so simple to just some option on this site to 'opt out' of continuing witht the same service/plan after the contract expires...but alas, no...)

Argh.

If you're heading overseas and don't want to take your service with you, there are a couple of options available to you. Your best option will really depend on whether you want to keep your number or not.

If you would like to keep your current number and use it again when you get back, your best option is to switch your post paid service, to prepaid. There is no cost to switch to prepaid, and if you select a 365 day recharge, your number will remain active while you are overseas, without you having to keep paying for it. Once you come back, you can then simply go back onto a plan if you want to.

Your other option is to disconnect the service, this will result in the loss of your current mobile number. If you would prefer to simply disconnect the service, I can arrange this for you.

I've sent you a private message with my contact details. If you email me and let me know which option you would like to go with, I will take care of it for you.

Cheers,

-Bruno.
