I know this has come up before.. but BB9900?!

Message 1 of 5 (452 Views)

hello,

I became a proud owner of the blackberry 9900 just yesterday, actually. I love blackberry phones, having been a proud owner of one before.. and so after a looooong wait, both on the phone and off (we had to call back to see where our phone was 2 months after ordering it, only to be told it was out of stock, and they had stopped making it...), you can imagine my delight when I got the phone this morning! the only problem is, I can't seem to recieve SMS messages D: and I have done my research, and I realise that it should be fine if I update my software to v7.1! however, I can't seem to do just that ): I have downloaded the desktop software, and then the update version itself, but when I go to update, it says 'This BlackBerry® Device Software upgrade includes new features and significant enhancements to the BlackBerry® solution and, as such, is only available to users with an active BlackBerry subscription. To learn more about BlackBerry® service, please visit www.blackberry.com/service.'........ what does that mean D::::: I do not, however, have a blackberry sim card, and therefore no blackberry internet- is that the problem? but I know that there have been people who went in circles trying to figure out why the SMS problem was occuring, only to find that the update fixed it! what should I do? I'm using a 10 year old samsung flip phone that doesn't even have a memory card slot, or bluetooth, please help ASAP!

thanks heaps for your time team!

x Jill

Hi,

You will need to call Vodafone and ask them to activate BIS on your service

Cheers,

Congratulations on your new phone, I bet you are happy to have such a shiny new handset!

As user SAW has mentioned above, an 'active Blackberry subscription' is referring to having BIS set up on your Blackberry, so that you're able to take advantage of the email and messaging services that your Blackberry has to offer. When you first put your sim card into the BB9000 where you prompted to go through a set up process to get your BIS active on your phone? Also, do you currently have a plan with us, or are you using Prepaid? The BIS service is only available on a plan, and can't be made active on a Prepaid service.

I understand you must be really excited to use your new handset, and once I receive your answers I will be able to take the right steps to make sure everything is set up correctly!

Kind Regards,

James.

I've had a blackberry for years. SMS has nothing to do with having a BIS or not having one, thats like saying you can't make a phone call without a BIS activated.

A BIS is required for some internet access (again you don't actually need a BIS to access the internet), emails need a BIS, the blackberry appworld needs one and blackberry messanger needs it. Sometimes you'll need it for MMS but only using some networks.

Standard sms is a standard phone feature and does NOT need a blackberry subscription to work.

Thanks for taking the time to share that info for us!

You're absolutely correct, and just to clarify, in my post I am referring specifically to email and the Blackberry Messenger service that is available through BIS.

If you have any other tips or details you would like to share, let us know!

Kind Regards,

James.
