Had a look round the forum but cannot find the answer to this question.

There is an S2 for sale on internet. The seller says it is 3 months old and it is it is locked to Vodaphone.

I am with Telstra (through work contract - cannot change)

I want to buy the S2 from the internet.

Can I unlock it for free or is it possible there may be a charge?

If so how much would the charge likely be?

Ask for the IMEI number and then plug it in here https://unlock.vodafone.com.au/

It will either give you the unlock codes or tell you what it will cost. It is usually free.

I had a look on this thread earlier today and there was a very useful and detailed reply to my question. I did not take a note of the responders name.

From memory the reply basically said that it could be free. It might be $50 and there might also be an extra $50 fee if the phone was less than 6 months old. there was a bit more detail in the reply than these bits i remember. - thanks to the responder for all the useful details.

I went ahead and bought the phone however the reply has been now been deleted which is a bit puzzling. Can a forum mod give any clue why the reponse had to be removed?

Thanks for your enquiry. Not to spoil the fun but we would generally advise against purchasing any phone from a third party. The main reason for this is there is no guarantee as to what you're buying. The warranty may be void and if there are any faults with this device we cannot take any responsibility.

As new, we sell the Galaxy S II as soft locked. Soft locked meaning that the phone is locked to our network but there is no fee to unlock it and it can be done using our Unlocking Tool found on our website with the devices IMEI number. The IMEI would be located on the box if it comes in it's packaging otherwise it can be found by entering *#06# into the calling screen. 15 digits should then appear. This is the IMEI number.

Just keep in mind if there are any difficulties in completing this process we may not be able to assist you further as the device wouldn't be linked to a Vodafone account.

I have the sellers phone number so if I run into problems maybe I can get them to contact Vodafone on my behalf for help if their plan is still active.

If you face any problems unlocking the handset, the seller can fill out a difficulties form which will be promoted if any issues occur via the online handset unlocking tool.

You've definitely come to the right place to get your handset unlocking underway! 

You can unlock your handset online through our online unlocking tool here.

All you will need to do is pop in your device IMEI number, which you will find on the back of the box or by typing *#06# into your device. From here you will then be given a list of instructions to unlock the iPhone. Please make sure that you connect to iTunes as this will complete the unlock process.
